Mount Halla

Mount Halla or Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea. Volcano with an altitude of 1,950 meters is located on Jeju Island. The area around Mount Halla is a nature reserve Hallasan National Park (Hallasan Gungnip Gongwon / 한라산 국립 공원 / 漢 拏 山 國立 公園).



In this mountain there Gwaneumsa, the oldest Buddhist temple in this island. This temple was first built during the Goryeo Dynasty. As in many temples in Korea, Gwaneumsa destroyed and rebuilt in the 20th century. Outside the temple there is a monument commemorating the victims of the Jeju uprising occurred between 1948 and 1950.

Hallasan word meaning "mountain that can grasp and pull the galaxy". Mount Halla was born in the Age Cenozoikum when a massive eruption that was brought into the air. Of small and large eruptions of this mountain, Jeju Island also change shape since 25,000 years ago.

Halla Mountain area is divided into several different climates. Mountain peaks maintain the cold climate, the central part of temperate and subtropical coastal plains close. As a result, the snow-capped peak of Halla in the overall climate could be considered subtropical. The lake at the top of the mountain called Baengnokdam meaningful "pond inhabited by white deer". In the past this mountain was inhabited by deer, but now extinct. Remaining mammals are roebuck.
